Fading Magnificence of Raipur Rajbari

Failing your History tests consistently doesn't always mean a complete disregard for everything that portrays grandeur of our past.  I mean, look at us! I cannot remember when anyone among the five of us passed three history exams in a row and here we are diving deep into the history of a place that even our big, fat history books were too reluctant to do.

Raipur Rajbari, situated at a remote village in Birbhum district of West Bengal holds significant details of Bengali architecture that was in practice three centuries back. Those tall gateways, beautiful arches and sturdy beams that still stand strong are a treat to the eyes.
Well, I really can't deny there's a spooky feeling in this place, maybe because of tiny bats flying in and out every now and then. This is exactly the kind of place where you can expect to feel a cold hand on your shoulder and turn around to find nobody.

At several places, ceilings have given way under the weight of rubbles, so I'd advise to be cautious while climbing stairs or standing under ceilings. Do remember to carry a torch and wear shoes with proper grip as the stairs are dark and slippery.

Now, how to reach this place?

Assuming you're travelling from the nearest big city, Kolkata, you'll have to reach Bolpur by train, bus or car. Shantiniketan express, that leaves Howrah Station at 10:10 A.M. is the fastest and cheapest means for this journey. You can also opt for A.C. and non-A.C. bus from Esplanade. From Bolpur, there are electric autorichshaws (Toto) available that'll take you to this place. Toto fare may vary depending on the time of the year and your bargaining skills.

To sum it up, there are several places in West Bengal itself that are fading into ruins for lack of attention and maintenance. Just a little responsible behavior from our side can bring about a big difference. We sincerely hope, local authorities will take necessary measures to preserve this place.
