Srijani Shilpa Gram - A Mini-India

Being born and brought up in a metropolitan city often makes us forget a major percentage of this country's population is actually residing in villages. From our travels, one thing we've learnt in particular is, to understand the cultural roots of any region, one must travel to the remote parts of the place for that is where the identity of that place comes from. This notion was strengthened when we five paid a quick visit to Srijani Shilpa Gram, an endeavour by the West Bengal Government to shed light on the diverse culture of the country.

Little huts, exhibiting their structural trend in every state, contain tools, musical instruments or fabrics specific to that state. This gives the place an appearance of a Mini-India where you'll fine little excerpts from various parts of the country.

We must admit, this place is pretty well-maintained. Apart from regional huts, this place also hosts a number of well-carved sculptures. Natural beauty of this place is enhanced by the typical red soil of Birbhum. This colourful lotus (right), had been sitting quite unnoticed and I swear this picture is totally unedited.
We'd suggest to wear ketos or crocs while visiting this place because every time while entering a hut, you'll have to remove your shoes. Also, this place closes for tourists around 5 P.M., so, do plan your visit likewise. It may take somewhere around two hours for a complete trip.
How to reach?

Assuming you're travelling from the nearest big city, Kolkata, you'll have to reach Bolpur by train, bus or car. Shantiniketan express, that leaves Howrah Station at 10:10 A.M. is the fastest and cheapest means for this journey. You can also opt for A.C. and non-A.C. bus from Esplanade.

From Bolpur, there are electric autorichshaws (Toto) available that'll take you to this place. Toto fare may vary depending on the time of the year and your bargaining skills. The toto will take you through the picturesque lanes of Bishwabharati Bishwavidyalaya, so keep your cameras ready!

This place is very close to Shantiniketan Deer Park, hence, try to include that in your itinerary as well. Let's save details on Deer Park for another blog. Hope you found this information helpful. Do let us know about your experience or any suggestions through comments.
